It's a wireless hotspot.
　　对 话 　　Max: Why is that man working on his laptop in this cafe?
　　Jim: It's a wireless hotspot.
　　Max: What does that mean?
　　Jim: It means he's got a wireless network card in his computer so he can connect to the internet from here.
　　Max: Can he receive e-mail?
　　Jim: Of course. He can do absolutely anything here that he can do on his desktop at home.
　　Max: Cool! I've got to try that myself.
　　麦克斯：那个人怎么在这餐馆里使用膝上型计算机？
　　吉姆：那是个无线电热点。
　　麦克斯：什么叫无线电热点？ 　　吉姆：这是说，他的计算机里有一个无线网络卡，由这里可以接驳国际互联网。
　　麦克斯：他可以收到电子邮件吗？
　　吉姆：当然可以。他家里桌上型个人计算机所能做的，他在这里完全可以做到。
　　麦克斯：真棒！我也要试试这玩意。
　　供个人使用的小型计算机，最先有桌上型的，叫desktop computer。Desktop本来只是‘桌面’的意思，但现在常用来作desktop computer的简称，例如：The desktops (=desktop computers) in our office have to be replaced（我们办公室里的桌上型计算机须更换了）。
　　Laptop是仿desktop一字而成。人坐下时大腿部分叫lap，例如：Mary was holding the child on her lap（玛丽抱着坐在她膝上的孩子）。可置在膝上使用的计算机，就叫laptop computer，简称laptop，例如：Business travellers often carry laptops with them（公务旅客往往会携带膝上型计算机）。
　　膝上型计算机当然是可携式计算机或行动计算机，即portable computer或mobile computer。另一种体积更小的行动计算机是notebook computer或‘笔记型计算机’，简称notebook，例如：With a notebook computer, you can work anywhere - on a plane, in a hotel, and even at a conference（有一部笔记型计算机，你就到处都可以工作－在飞机上，旅馆里，甚至会议上）。
　　行动计算机装上无线网络卡，就可以凭无线局域网络(WLAN或Wireless Local Area Network)接驳国际互联网。无线局域网络覆盖的地方，叫做wireless hotspot（无线电热点），例如：Wireless hotspots are increasingly found in airports and hotels（越来越多飞机场和旅馆都设有无线电热点）。流动计算机可以接驳国际互联网，功用自然大大增加。
