　　Fortunately Jane's profession had led to her working all over the world. She frequently visited China and was aware that the incidence of breast cancer there was approximately one woman in 10,000. Convinced that the answer lay in the difference between western and eastern diets, she immediately decided to cut out all dairy produce from her own diet. Amazingly, her tumour not only stopped growing but actually began to shrink.

　　这个lead，翻译过来是引导、领导、带领之类的意思，当然，可以有很多引申的意义。不过，在中国文化里，“领导”之类跟“官”有关的文化比较发达，大家也更感兴趣，所以，对这个英文的利用率相对比较底，常常说的是：A strong government leads us to a better future. 或者是：Led by the new boss, we are expecting a higher income this year. 呵呵，除了权，就是钱。其实，这个词最基本的含义是：To show the way to by going in advance. 比如在电*有人给你领座，就是lead，去一个地方参观，有人给你引路，就是lead.相近的意思就是To guide or direct in a course，比如可以说：lead a horse by the halter. 牵着马。稍微引申一下，就可以表达To serve as a route for; take，比如说：The path led them to a cemetery. 沿着这条路他们来到了墓地，这一段文章里的第一句也是这个意思，不过是用了一个常见的搭配lead to，表示导致、引出的意思：Fortunately Jane's profession had led to her working all over the world. 幸运的是，由于Jane的职业关系，她得以周游世界。不过，lead还有其他用法，比如：He led us to believe his theory. 他使得我们相信他的理论，这个lead就是to guide the behavior or opinion of,甚至有点induce诱导的意味了。

　　指挥乐队是lead an orchestra，主持会议、领导集会*也是lead，比如lead a discussion, lead the antiwar movement. 于是，警察局的黑名单上你就成了首犯了，Your name led the list. 抓你的原因，可能还因为你有经济问题，lead a luxurious life on a modest income.虽然他们可能怀疑你还跟一桩谋杀案有关，但是，没有线索了，lost a promising lead in the murder case.他们现在就到你为主要作者的一本里去找线索，Try to find something in a book with you as the lead author.

　　好，下面我比较感兴趣的是aware这个单词，我打算单独谈论这个问题，这一次还是把这一段先看完。Jane常到中国访问，发现中国妇女患乳腺癌的概率很低，万分之一。她认为主要原因在diet的区别上。什么是diet呢？这个地方应该是指饮食结构，就是你吃的东西是由哪些东西按什么比例组成的。中国的烹调跟法国的一样在世界上都是公认比较好的，不过，中国人的传统食谱基本上没有任何奶制品，而且非常讲究口味，所以，现在也开始有很多胖人，也有必要注意diet了。很多年前我到国外的时候，发现有些老外每天吃饭要计算一下今天吃了多少calories（热量），多少protein（蛋白质），多少fat，多少sodium，对cholesterol（胆固醇）有一种谈虎色变的感觉，严格控制。餐馆里按照法律规定还要有一个dietician，食品营养师，调控食物，保证顾客的身体健康。所以，你既要注意diet这个词的运用，也要注意你的diet!
