国际互联网名称和编号分配公司周四投票通过放开域名注册的限制，为公司和个人创造大量新域名铺平了道路。ICANN还允许域名中可以包含阿拉伯文和西里尔文字。目前已注册的域名有200多个，包括代表世界各国和地区的域名，例如中国的域名是.cn.

　　The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers （ICANN） has just approved the relaxation of the rules for the introduction of new Top-Level Domains—a move that could drastically change the Internet. The new decision will allow companies to register their brands as generic top-level domain names （TLDs）.

　　上述报道中，Top-Level Domains就是“域名”，简称TLDs，域名指的是网址的后缀，一般都用来表示网站代表的地域或者类别，例如通用域名.com代表商业类，……org代表非营利性组织等等。TLDs一般分为gTLDs（generic Top-Level Domains）“通用域名”，如.com, .edu, .gov等，以及ccTLDs（country code Top-Level Domains）“国家及地区代码域名”，如.cn, .uk, .fr等。
