　　As can be seen from the graph， the two curves show the fluctuation of a developing country birth and death rates in the first seventy years of this century. During the period from 1900 to 1916 the death rate remained stable. In 1916， however， it rose rapidly and reached the peak of 60 deaths per thousand in 1920. From 1920 to 1930 the death rate fell.

　　There was two periods of rapid increase in the death rate between 1930 and 1945. Since 1945 it has fallen steadily.

　　On the other hand ，before 1920 the birth rate remained stable. Then， in 1920， it dropped until it reached 30 births per thousand in 1930. From 1930 to 1945， there was a gradual rise， which has been followed by a steady fall since 1945.

　　What accounts for the steady fall of birth and death rates since 1945 is the effective birth control measures and the improvement of living standard.
