“想当然”真不是think of course, 翻译错太尴尬

在日常生活中，我们都有过“想当然”的经历。那么问题来了，“想当然”用英语该怎么说呢？

有同学可能会说，想=think，当然=of course，“想当然”难道就是think of course?

正确的说法是：

assume

来看两个例句：

Kate was young and she was wearing student-type clothes so I assumed she was studying here. 

凯特很年轻，穿着学生式的衣服，所以我想当然地以为她在这里学习。
There was a knock at the door. Now Saito knew his mother had promised to visit, so he assumed it was her. 有人敲门。斋藤知道他母亲答应要来看他，所以他就想当然地以为是母亲来了。

在美剧《生活大爆炸》中，Sheldon回复Bernadette时就用到了这个词：

Bernadette: Me, Sheldon. I m obviously pregnant. Sheldon: Well, you never said it to my face. And the last time I assumed a woman was pregnant,  it did not go over well. -我啊，谢尔顿。我孕相多明显啊。 -因为你还没当面跟我说过，我上一次想当然地认为一名女士怀孕时， 结果还挺糟糕的。

要表示“认为……理所当然”，我们可以用这个表达：

take for granted

We should be grateful to our parents love instead of take it for granted. 

我们应该感谢父母的爱，而不应视其为理所应当之事。 

I didn t know that Penny hadn t been to college. I suppose I just took it for granted.
