　　Angie: I can play the piano, but I couldn't do that. How does she do it?
　　Clare: She sight-reads really well.
　　Angie: I wish I could do that, it's a great skill.
　　克蕾：亲友开家庭派对，都会找我姐姐。
　　安吉：为什么？她唱歌唱得很好听吗？
　　克蕾：不是，但她弹钢琴弹得很好。无论什么乐谱，放在她面前，她都会弹。
　　安吉：我也懂得弹钢琴，但不能像你姐姐那样。她是怎样做得到的？
　　克蕾：她擅长演奏陌生乐谱。
　　安吉：我真希望自己也能够这样。那是很了不起的技巧。
　　克蕾称赞她的姐姐：My elder sister sight-reads really well。Sight-read看到完全陌生的乐谱，即能按谱歌唱或演奏，无须预习或听过别人表演。这个字可以作及物(transitive verb)或不及物动词(intransitive verb)，即其后可带受词(object)，也可不带，例如：(1) Though he had never sung the song before, he sight-read it without any difficulty（他虽然从来没有唱过这首歌，但一看乐谱，就能演唱，毫不费力）。(2) A good musician must be able to sight-read（优秀的乐师，看到完全陌生的乐谱也必须能够演奏）。从前，说儿女或兄弟姊妹中较年长者，必须用elder、eldest二字，例如你有两个儿子，年纪较大的一个叫elder son；有不止两个儿子，年纪者才可称为eldest son。但是，今天older、oldest二字逐渐取代elder、eldest。He is my older/oldest son等已经没有人视为错误说法。而eldest的意思也有了改变：即使你只有两个儿子或一个哥哥，都可以说He is my eldest son/brother，不一定要改用elder一字。这和oldest不同：my oldest son/brother表示你最少有三个儿子/两个哥哥。Elder、eldest作形容词(adjective)，一般只可用在名词之前，这和older、oldest也不同。你可以说My brother is two years older than I am（我哥哥比我大两岁），但不可以说elder than。
