Confusingly, APA documentation uses endnotes (which go at the end of the document rather than the foot of the page) but calls them footnotes. Footnotes are numbered consecutively from 1 onwards (use superscript letters—better yet use your word processor's footnote command. The notes themselves are gathered on a separate page or pages under the word Footnotes (which appears on the first page of notes only), centered and not in italics or bold. Treat the notes like any other text paragraph——double-space, use the same size font, and indent each new note. Each note begins with the number, a period, and a space. Single notes, incidentally, may continue for more than one paragraph.

Footnotes may be used for comments that may not fit well in the body of the essay, such as evaluative comments on sources. Here are some typical kinds of comments that might go in footnotes or endnotes. Note that a space goes between the number and the text of the note.

An acknowledgment, numbered "1" and attached to the title or first sentence of the essay.

  1. Thanks to the Society of Junior Fellows for generous research support.

A note on method, attached to the first citation of pertinent material.

  8. Pseudonyms have been used to preserve the confidentiality of interviewees.

  2. In 1998 Allient Computing changed its accounting procedures, making comparison with previous years impractical.

A bibliographic note with suggested additional sources, for which bibliographic information would be included in the references.

  1. On this difficult subject see Demus (1970). Huyghe (1958) supplies useful documentation on other influences from the Near and Far East including Persian, Egyptian, Indian and Chinese Art of earlier periods.
