　　飞机票有一种叫standby ticket（后备机票）。假如原已订了机票的乘客临时通知取消行程，航空公司就会出售后备机票给候补的乘客，所以这种机票通常在班机将近起飞时才发售，票价特别便宜。I am afraid there is only one standby ticket for Paris即‘对不起，往巴黎的后备机票只有一张’。候补的乘客，则叫standby passenger或standby，例如：The standby hurriedly got on the flight（那候补乘客匆匆上机）。On standby即‘候补’，多用来指候补乘搭飞机、火车、轮船等，例如：As I could not get a reservation on the three o'clock flight, I had to go on standby（我无法预订到三点钟班机的机票，只能列入候补名单）。On standby的另一意思，是‘备用’或‘待命而动’，例如：Hundreds of cops are on standby in case the protest becomes a riot（数百警员随时待命，以防*变成*）。希腊航空公司叫Hellenair，读者请勿以为和木马屠城的女主角海伦(Helen)有什么关系。根据希腊神话，希腊各部落的始祖叫赫楞(Hellen)，所以Hellenic即‘希腊人的’，a Hellene即‘希腊人’。这两个字一般是指古希腊人、文化等，例如：往希腊访古，叫做to go on a Hellenic tour；乘船游爱琴海眺望希腊古迹，则叫做to take a Hellenic cruise。至于Greek一字，当然也可以指‘希腊人’或‘希腊的’，但这个字没有Hellenic或Hellene的远古味道。
